Book Meme

Just cause I feel like it.

Book Meme

Total number of books owned:

Approximately 577. There are 579 in my LibraryThing library but two of those have been given away since the last time I updated.

Last book bought:

The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland.

Last book read:

The Gathering by Anne Enright.

Five books that mean a lot to you:

Possession by A.S. Byatt. Probably my favorite novel ever. A pair of beautiful love stories combined with a satire of academia and a page-turning literary mystery, with two twists at the end that combine and confound all of the above.

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. My favorite non-fiction book. It's about the author's experiences hiking the Appalachian trail. I re-read it every year at the beginning of the summer. The writing is terrific and it's funny, moving, insightful and interesting, and it just makes me feel good.

The Death of Ivan Illych and other stories by Leo Tolstoy. My experience with Russian literature started with this collection of gorgeous short stories.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I had no idea about the Christian-allegory part when I was a kid, I just thought it was a terrific fantasy-adventure story about some scrappy kids and I just fell in love with it.

People's History of the United States
by Howard Zinn. The lefty activist and thinker gives us his version of a textbook history of America and taught me to ask questions and look at both sides of the story.

There are so many others- Jane Eyre, Alias Grace, Gandhi's Autobiography, One Hundred Years of Solitude... the list goes on and on! And that's just prose. Don't even get me started on poetry and graphic novels!
