Musing Mondays

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about blog comments

How do you respond to the comments on your blog? Do you try to email individually or comment on post yourself answering the comments above? What do you think is the best way to respond to comments and do you respond to all of them? Do you feel slighted if you don't receive a response back from the blog owner? (question courtesy of Jenn)

I respond by posting in the comments section when I feel like a response is warranted. If it's something I'd rather keep private I'll email the person but that's rare. I try to comment back on people's blogs when they comment on mine, but I'm not as good at keeping up with this as I'd like to be. I try to respond to as many as I can though. I do not feel slighted if I don't receive a comment back from someone- but I'm happy when I do. I've actually had people get snippy with me if I didn't comment back or do it fast enough- chill out already! It's just a blog! There are courtesies involved in being in the blogosphere but there are no rules- or at least, in my opinion, there shouldn't be!

I have to say that I agree with everything in your post. pretty much what I was trying to say but without all my trips into tangentland...which is where I usually live.
glad you liked the award I was plugging. I mean, a puppy needs help keeping his blog going...lol

This has been a great discussion.
I have enjoyed reading others perspectives and it's given me some things to think about. I'm surprised that someone would get snippy with you if you didn't comment back or do it fast enough...that's a bit extreme!
I feel a bit slighted ONLY when I comment frequently on a blog and get no reply ever or visit to my blog. I know that everyone has struggles with balancing their time. It just seems the courteous thing to do but I may be expecting too much.

This is an excellent question. I come from a different perspective as I manage blogs for media company. A way I keep in touch with bloggers is through commenting. I feel the only way to truly engage with the blogger and her content is to dialog with it. And, like a little kid, I check back a lot to see if the blogger responded. Though, I do not expect nor demand a return thought. It's human conversation that ebbs and flows.

I think you have it just right. That is what I do also.

Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day. After reading all these great musing posts, I've decided that I'm a complete slacker when it comes to responding to first time visitors to my blog!

I love being able to respond via email, but visiting a blog for the first time is fun too.

I pondered at this question a lot when I was an inchoate blogger. I wish to be able to reply to all the comments, given that the comments are open-ended. I also want to acknowledge all my readers and not to make them feel they are ignored. The etiquette of dealing with comments also lead to a bigger question of when and how to link a blog. Anyway, I appreciate your taking time to share your thoughts on my blog. :)

I respond to comments within my blog post. Once in a great while I will email someone, if I have what I feel is an important question to ask, especially regarding the Holocaust.

Yes, they need to chill out, indeed.

In the spirit of this week's question, I'm going to respond to everyone's comments here.

Scobberlotcher- wooo!!! yay! thank you!

Caite: we all visit Tangetland now and then! :-)

Red lady-Bonnie, I know what you mean. After a while if you get absolutely no response it feels like a waste of time to comment.

Comic-Laconic, I think it's the difference between a professional blogger and someone like me who does a blog as a personal hobby, even though I hope my blog is complementing my professional life. In a professional context you have slightly different goals and priorities I would guess.

Candy, Thanks. We're all just doing the best we can. :-)

Beth- thanks! :-)

Holly, yes, I always enjoy visiting new blogs and getting to know new folks :-)

Matt, I'd like to respond to everyone but I'd also like to not spend 12 hours a day online. :-)

Jew Wishes, you're amazing about responding. I seldom check back on my comments (not just to you) to see if there is a response but I notice how active you are. Brava!

I can't believe people have gotten snippy with you when you haven't responded or haven't been able to right away. Well, I guess I can believe it, but it's really sad. I do like it when the blogger responds to my comments, but I can't say I've ever gotten upset over it if he or she doesn't.
