Booking Through Thursday

What’s the biggest book you’ve read recently?

(Feel free to think “big” as size, or as popularity, or in any other way you care to interpret.)

The largest book I've read recently is no doubt A.S. Byatt's The Children's Book; the galley was about 10x6 inches and 600+ pages. A brick!

The most popular book I've read is Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which I've almost finished.

The book that had the biggest impact on me was Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It left me emotional for the whole day I finished it!

What about you?

I would say the biggest book I've read recently is A Prayer for Owen Meany - in BOTH page count and popularity.

Hmmm, you're a second person mentioning Byatt's book and I didn't even know it existed. Is it new?
The Girls with a Dragon Tattoo is definitely big in popularity.

Now, that is a good shout,

I'm keeping this one on hold right now, but if it makes the Booker shortlist, I'll probably read it. Haven't read the greatest reviews about it, and don't want to read that "big" a book,if it's not going to be good.

Have Girl With The Dragon Tattoo on my TBR.

Such a fun question! What could be better than a good, big book. Mine--biggest in popularity: The Help, which is not exactly heavyweight literature, but thought-provoking. Biggest in size, though not all that big (400+ pp): Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore. It's the first book of his that I've really loved.

I'm really looking forward to the new Byatt book, even though I know it'll take me months to get it read!

I prefer to read books with 400+ pages. May be because I hate a good book to end fast!

Oh, I'm so glad you liked Part-Time Indian!

Hmmm. On re-reading, I guess you didn't actually say that; you said it left you emotional. Which could mean you stomped around your house, angrily shouting "I wasted hours on this! This was a dumb waste of time!" and slamming doors and such.

I hope that wasn't the case!

The title The Children's Book is not one of those that you would expect to be a zillion pages.
My BTT is up at The Burton Review

Carrie- wow, I haven't read that- yet!

Lilly- it comes out in October. I got a galley from the publisher several months ago.

Anothercookie- I can understand that. Personally I loved it but it's probably not for everybody.

Susan- it is!

Ellen- I've had the Murakami book on my radar for a long, long time- maybe it's time to pick it up with your wonderful endorsement!

JL- it will, but it's worth it :-)

Brandy- I LOVED it. I thought it was brilliant and beautiful.

Marie- no, you're right!

I would say "big" could mean how much you enjoyed it. In which case I would recommned The Sugar Queen which I just finished. I smelled peppermint while reading, and craved egg sandwiches, and smiled, and sighed, and yes, even got a little teary eyed. It was definitely big, even though it's a paperback and was only 276 pages. You can read my review on my blog: http://thecrowdedleaf.wordpress.com.

Have a good day!

Great list! I like the idea of the book that left the biggest impact. . .I'll have to think about that one.

Holy cow! The Children's Book is huge and obviously not intended for children!

I read that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has got mixed reviews and the book sits still on the shelf. A.S. Byatt has been a stranger to me since Possession. But I recently read that The Children's Book has made the Booker longlist 2009. So I've got some motivation to read these two. :)

I would like to read all 3 of these books.
