Booking Through Thursday: Cheating

btt button

Do you cheat and peek at the ends of books? (Come on, be honest.)
No. I never look at the ending of a book. I might flip ahead to see how many pages are left in a book or chapter but I never read ahead for spoilers. I have been known to read spoilers for movies and TV shows- for some reason I dislike suspense on screen but I love it in my books!

I check pages left, I read last sentences - mostly. But I don't read passages at the end of a book just to know what happened. I am currently reading Wuthering Heights and would be finishing by this evening. Yesterday evening I tried to peep what would happen but a one-sentence read offered nothing.

I actually had a nightmare last night in which someone was forcing me to look at the last pages of a book. What does this say about my psyche? Nothing good, I fear.

I never read the last pages, or even the last sentence. Now I could be accused of rushing through when things are going at a breakneck pace to get to the end faster, but to cheat and read the ending? Never.

How is this "cheating"? The few times I have neglected to do it (recently, with The House at Riverton), I have regretted it! It's good to read the ending and see if a book is worth the journey!

I have only ever done it twice. Once during one of the Harry Potter books because I HAD to sleep and I couldn't go to bed wondering about something and the other was with Atonement. Antonement's ending pissed me off so bad I couldn't finish the book. So I really try not to skip ahead unless I am struggling with a book and I think it maaay help me finish.

I don't look ahead either.

I never look ahead and definitely wouldn't want to read the ending ahead of time. My son reads ahead and it drives me crazy!

I never, never read the ending. I think it just ruins the book. I look to see how many pages the book has but that's about it.

I sometimes read the last few lines of the book, but I don't think of it as "cheating." I'm usually checking to make sure that my favorite character survives or isn't the murderer or something like that. More like reassuring myself than actually cheating.

Oh, this question reminds me of the film When Harry Met Sally because Harry always reads the end first. Not me, why spoil the surprise? Unless the book's going to be discarded midway through, and you just have to know what's going on. Can't say that's happened to me, though, I compulsively finish every book whether I like it or not.

I admit it. I often do it. And I don't consider it cheating...because it is the only way I can live with myself. ;-)

What Alexia said! I never used to do it, but I sometimes do it now. Mostly to make sure I want to keep reading, if I'm getting stuck and not sure I want to commit to finish it. Don't consider it "cheating" at all.

I do look, but I'm more likely to do that with non-fiction. Not just the ending, but throughout. With fiction I try hard to resist but sometimes just can't help myself!
