A.S. Byatt has been a stranger to me since Possession. But I recently read that The Children's Book has made the Booker longlist 2009. In which case I would recommned <i>The Sugar Queen</i> which I just finished. I smelled peppermint while reading, and craved egg sandwiches, and smiled, and sighed, and yes, even got a little teary eyed. It was definitely big, even though it's a paperback and was only 276 pages.
