It is interesting ...I totally agree with this post. It is interesting how the debate is going. it happens at many places and in many fields. To title it 'best book' makes it looks as if the litfic genre encapsulates all other genres...ImageNationshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06021414643103601330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1359999156621466745.post-39753758259083236422009-09-28T09:55:50.403-04:002009-09-28T09:55:50.403-04:00KR --
My reference to the "sci-fi community&...KR --

My reference to the "sci-fi community" was not a backhanded way of referring to either you or Mr. Robinson; I was less responding to either Mr. Robinson's points or your own, and more just writing some thoughts I had on the topic.

Actually, I wholeheartedly agree with your excellent post on the coverage given to litfic awards -- and I do think that these awards are often overexposed precisely because they're being touted as "best book overall" awards.Mr. BBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01498267143462724892noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1359999156621466745.post-82738669982949316012009-09-28T02:33:27.432-04:002009-09-28T02:33:27.432-04:00I don't really worry about these awards to muc...I don't really worry about these awards to much (despite my earlier response).

However, I think Mr. Bibliophile has missed Kim Stanley Robinson's point. He thought there were works of science fiction that had the X that should mean they got consideration for awards that require that quality. Not that they should be considered because they have quality Y.

And I think he's misunderstood my point about the relative newsworthiness of literary fiction. The comparison of hits was to refute the argument that "it's hard enough to draw attention to lit fic without naysayers saying it doesn't deserve the attention." Literary fiction gets all sorts of attention. The awards that get in the news are literary fiction. The awards with mainstream prestige are for literary fiction. In other words, literary fiction isn't a red-headed stepchild. Not in terms of awards at least.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08169008132642213854noreply@blogger.com
