Book Blogger Appreciation Week Meme

You can find this meme and more links to answers here.

1) What has been one of the highlights of blogging for you?

One of the many highlights of blogging was having my review of The City and The City excerpted by the presenter at a reading by author China Mieville and then getting him to sign my book to me via the blog:

Another was the time I went to a library conference and a library marketer I email occasionally said she'd read my blog- the first time someone outside my immediate acquaintance had mentioned it to me out of the blue.

2) What blogger has helped you out with your blog by answering questions, linking to you, or inspiring you?

That would be Sandra of Fresh Ink Books, who writes beautiful reviews of literary fiction and has absolutely fantastic taste.

3) What one question do you have about BBAW that someone who participated last year could answer?

A question I have about BBAW- how is the "short list" of nominated blogs for the various awards selected from the myriad of entries?

I've often wondered how the short list is selected.

Great question. Each category has a panel of 5 people who will review 5 posts of each nominated blog. these 5 posts will be ones that the nominated blogger has selected as their best for that category. (like an actor submitting their best TV episode for Emmy consideration)

We have a scoresheet of criteria in the following categories: Quality of Writing, Originality and Diversity of Content, Audience Engagement, and Visual Aesthetic and Functionality. The scoresheet should be posted on the site sometime soon for everyone to see, we've just been tweaking and finalizing it. Then, the scores will be averaged and voila! Shortlist. A few categories have way too many nominations to do it this way and so they will be divided up into smaller panels. I really hope it's fair this way...last year I did it by number of nominations received and it was all over the place. I hope this is a better representation of the respective smaller communities within the larger book blogging community.

Being recognized by a favourite author must be amazing!

What an honor to have an excerpt of your review used at a reading by the author!!

Great question about the short list and I'm glad that Amy answered it here.
