Booking Through Thursday: Signed Copies

Do signed copies excite you? Tempt you? Delight you? Or does it not matter to you?

I love signed copies. I've been collecting them since college and I think it's really fun to get a book signed. Here's one of my favorites:

and one of the prettiest:

According to my LibraryThing catalog, I have 62 signed copies now.

If I'm going to buy a book and I see signed copies at the store, I'll buy the signed copy, and I love going to readings and meeting authors to get my books signed. It's a great memento of the occasion, and an opportunity to tell an author I appreciate his or her work. I won't buy a book I'm not interested in just to have it signed but I've been known to make the occasional impulse buy at a reading. I have a special bookshelf in my office for my signed copies- and it's filling up fast!

And this is an old picture- I'm now on to three shelves!

  1. The "great blog" is particularly impressive :D I remember when you told us about meeting MiƩville - sounds like a fantastic experience.

  2. That is some seriously impressive handwriting. I like the idea of having separate shelves; unfortunately, I'm all out of shelves at the moment and still have books on the floor after BEA. :)

  3. I am not a big collector of signed editions, mostly because they seem so hard to find out here. I do have one book that is signed by the author that I am thrilled about though. It's a copy of Labrador by T.J. Dawe, who is a really great live dramatic performer. I think if it were a bit easier to come by signed copies I would probably be more of a collector.

  4. I'm impressed with your collection.

I received my first two signed books on Tuesday. At a talk by two crime writers, I won the quiz afterwards receiving a signed copy from both authors.

  10. Sixty-two?! Well, that's sixty more than I have. ;) I'm very impressed with you, and I like how you posted the picture of the pretties, because as we all know, beauty is important. XO

  13. This post made me go count my signed copies :) I have 33 (probably one or two more since I do let my mom read them) and can't wait til they take up a whole bookcase, not just a full shelf!
I love them for all the reasons you do.

  14. Nymeth, yeah, that was a definite highlight for me! :-)

Trisha, I didn't either but I had this extra folding shelf that I decided to set up when I got my desk and made space in my sewing room for an "office"- presto! more space! :-)

Zibilee- it's an illness of opportunity :-)

    Petty- nice!

    Caite :-)

    Melanie- thanks!

Kathleen- I love them all, even the ones I didn't like, LOL

Bellezza- I love that pretty one and loved that the author took the time to do such nice calligraphy for everyone :-)

    Vicki, Lola, Kathy- :-) it's fun :-)

    Stacy- it's so fun, isn't it? :-)

  16. Wow impressive collection. I got a few signed at BEA last year but I don't have nearly as many as you. Good work :)

  17. One of the best reasons NOT to use an e-reader. Unless you want to have authors scribble all over your $500 high-tech device.

p.s. Loved The City and The City

  18. I would like signed copies if it meant I was meeting the author. Otherwise I would not care. Not a lot of authors seem to come to upstate NY though :( It is great that you get to meet so many.

  19. Wow, that's an impressive collection! I love signed books too, but I don't have too many of them as I don't get the opportunity to go to very many signings. I found most of my signed copies by accident; I stumbled across them at used book sales, or I found signed copies in new bookstores following an author event that I missed.
