It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Well, I'm just back from a marvelous week-long vacation at Walt Disney World, my first trip there. My husband and I went for our 12th wedding anniversary, and we took it by the horns. We lapped rides. We shopped. We ate. We traded pins, walked till our feet were ready to fall off, and hung out at the pool. We did a ton of character meets and got our pictures taken by Disney's roving armies of photographers many, many times. It was amazing.

There's Belle, the literary princess, with the Beast during Disney's daily parade, Festival of Fantasy. (I think that's what it's called.) We also met her at a princess breakfast and I recommended Possession, by A.S. Byatt, to her. I don't know if pre-Revolutionary royalty had access to 20th century novels, but there you go.

Reading? Well, I finished two books at Disney. I read during our non-park day (we took a break mid-week and stayed at our resort for the day) and sometimes at night before bed. When I didn't just collapse. The two books I read were

Ghosts, by Cesar Aira, about a family living in a haunted apartment building. It started out like a typical Aira and continued that way until about 3/4 of the way through when it took a decidedly darker turn.
I also read Ghost Lights, by Lydia Millet (no, I was not on a ghost kick- just a coincidence), second in her Extinction trilogy and for me probably the weakest of the three. It was about a man's crisis of self and what happens when he realizes he's a ghost in his own life. Hal, middle-aged IRS executive, finds out that his wife is having an affair at the same time that her boss disappears in a Belize jungle. He volunteers to find him, as much to get away from himself as from his wife and troubled family life.

I still have my chunksters waiting for me- Flood of Fire and The Big Green Tent- which I intend to get back to this week. But first I have some tired limbs to rest!

What are you reading?
