Following up last week’s question about reading writing/grammar guides, this week, we’re expanding the question….
First I'll try to figure out the gadget myself but if I have questions I'll use the manual. I have a good sense for how things should work though and often I don't need to. But I'm not one of those people who refuses to read the manual, either. I don't read manuals generally, like for fun though. I read language books sometimes, if I'm trying to learn a language, and I just bought my first (three) gardening books a few weeks ago. I also like to read cookbooks. And then there are my legions of craft books, which I love. Sometimes I'll read business manuals but I don't do pop-psychology self-help books!Scenario: You’ve just bought some complicated gadget home . . . do you read the accompanying documentation? Or not?

I try to work things out too - those instruction manuals are usually incomprehensible to me anyway.
I didn't think of cookbooks and I do use those a lot, but adapt the recipes to suit.
I have a whole bookshelf of cookbooks and part of the fun is to sit and read them! I also have lots of gardening books which I love to read.
I am quite happy to read cook books and gardening books just as long as no one expects me to put them to any good use!
I love looking at craft books, even if I don't read them. I also like to read drawing books and art books and relate what they say to writing. But I think that just makes me weird! :P
