Sunday Salon

This rainy Sunday Father's Day, I'm supposed to go out for breakfast with my dad, and then I'll have the whole afternoon free for reading. Up today:

  • I'm continuing with Joshua Henkin's Matrimony, which I'm enjoying;
  • I have to catch up on my Shojo Beat addiction; the July issue is still sitting in my incoming-mail bin!
  • I'm reading David Sedaris's new book one essay at a time and it's lots of fun;
  • and I'm deeply engrossed in Imre Kertesz's Fatelessness, a Holocaust novel.
New books this week:
  • The White Mary, by Kira Salak,
  • Such A Pretty Fat, by Jen Lancaster- I'm still not done with Bitter is the New Black but at least I'm ready!, and
  • Samuel Shem's The Spirit of the Place, not to mention
  • The Triumph of Deborah, by Eva Etzioni-Halevi, which I'm very excited about because when I'm done I'm going to have the opportunity to interview the author for the blog! I'm going to start Deborah as soon as I'm done with Matrimony.
I'm getting better at pacing and prioritizing my reading and feeling less overwhelmed in general. Mostly I'm just having a good time with this whole blogging thing. Yesterday my husband and I went to Barnes and Noble to find Father's Day gifts for his dad and I had fun using my librarian instincts to gauge what he might like. I think we made some good choices but we'll see when he opens his presents! I love book shopping for other people but it is difficult to drag myself away from the fiction and graphic novel sections.

Speaking of graphic novels, I've got two requested via ILL from my local library system, one of which has arrived. I'm picking it up tomorrow- it's called Aya and it's by Marguerite Abouet and Clement Oubrerie and originally it was part of a series edited by Rabbi's Cat author/illustrator Joann Sfar. And it's French/African. So I'm very interested. More on that in a couple of weeks.

In the mean time I hope everyone has a great Father's Day!

It's rainy here too...a perfect day for reading. I'm especially jealous of your David Sedaris reading. I'm seriously considering ordering an Amazon Kindle (even though I have issues with Amazon), and if I do Sedaris's will be the first book I purchase.

Have you ever listened to Sedaris on audiobooks? I much prefer that to reading his essays. His voice, his ironic tone add so much to the stories. I heard him interviewed on Fresh Air the other day, it was a hoot!

I got Sedaris sitting on my Shelf.

I was supposed to finish The Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen, a non-fiction. I did nothing of the sort. I went on book buying spree and also bought..well..check it out!

I wish it would rain here. It's promising to be another hot day though.

I love shopping for books for others. I found a couple of good books for my father and father-in-law this year--hopefully they will like my choices for them.

I am glad you are enjoying Matrimony. I hope to read that one of these days. I just got a copy of The White Mary in the mail recently too. It's fun to see so many people reading the same books at once--it's almost like being a part of a mini book club.

I hope you have a good week!

I'm just starting to get into the whole graphic novel thing myself so I'm interested in hearing more about what you think of your newest reads =)

I also love shopping for books for other people. Trying to figure out something that they'll enjoy but haven't read yet. Its so much fun! How did your OH's dad like the books? I hope that they were a hit. =)

Samuel Shem (_The Spirit of the Place_) will be at The Harvard Bookstore on June 24th for a reading.
I finished the book last night and should have my review up later tonight. I enjoyed it (4 stars of 5 possible).

I got to meet David Sedaris at a reading this weekend! So I'll definitely be reading that one soon as well!

I'm glad to hear the Sedaris is proving as good as the hype said it would be.
