Tuesday Thingers

Since we're past the Fourth of July and the summer season has officially started, what are your plans for the summer? Vacations, trips? Trips that involve reading? Reading plans? If you're going somewhere, do you do any reading to prepare? Do you read local literature as part of your trip? Have you thought about using the LT Local feature to help plan your book-buying?

My answer: I'm going to Las Vegas for three days, then to San Francisco for a week in mid-August, and I've done a little travel-book-reading to get ready but that's about it. I definitely plan to spend a lot of time in bookstores in San Fran (I'm not sure what Vegas has to offer in terms of literary life but we'll see!), and already have a smallish shopping list for one particular bookstore (City Lights). As it gets closer I'll probably do some background historical reading on both cities as well. We'll do other things in San Francisco but I absolutely plan to make book shopping and book stuff part of the trip. In Vegas, my plans are to visit one of my best friends and go to the Star Trek Experience- I'll forgo the highbrow for a couple of days and just have fun. I do plan on using the LT Local feature to help pick out some places to visit! What are you doing?

Have fun in Vegas! This time of year, it should be painfully hot, so drink lots and lots of water. I think Las Vegas is the kind of city where one naturally should forego any real highbrow entertainment and just see all the pretty lights and everything. :) I lived there for a summer and a half (long story) and really enjoyed all of the shows that there are to see.

I like how you plan travel reading around your upcoming trip. Maybe I should do a little of that before Sacramento. (It is our state capitol). Have a good trip and here is my post. I still can't figure out making the hyper-link.

I so jealous!! not the Vegas thing, though I'm happy for you, but The STAR TREK CONVENTION!! :-D

Are you dressing up as anyone? A friend of mine goes as a Klingon female. She's got the whole name and history worked out. I've never been to one. :''(

I had fun with this post and played with it... maybe too much, but I don't think my psychiatrist gets on the blogs, so I'm okay. In the Shadow of Mt. TBR

Marie, I wrote about Las Vegas in my post because I met my first author there. You never know what might happen. Not everything that happens in Vegas has to stay in Vegas... :)

Greetings from a fellow Boston-area librarian! My advice about Vegas is - don't go outside. I was there last summer in late July and it was 117. Yes, I said 117 degrees. Stay inside and gamble where its air-conditioned. But if you must go out, go to Nancy's Quilt shop. It rocks!

Here is mine for the week - nothing exciting for me this summer, except books and reviews. Your summer sounds great, though - I hope you have a blast!

I'm curious about the "smallish list" that you've compiled for a bookstore in SF ...is it stuff that can't be ordered from your local store here?

Enjoy your time away!

my answer to this week's TT is:

(I'm sorry! Add a simple book about html to my wishlist; I got all kinds of errors - broken tag was the most painful :) )

We just came back from Portland, OR. Motivation for going was twofold: (a) we'd never been there before, and (b) Powell's. We bought so many used books we have to ship a 30-pound box home. (Thank goodness for book rate, or it would have cost a fortune!) (Also, that's the source of the sudden influx of books to my GoodReads "To Read" shelf.) The rest of the summer will be spent trying to get through that 30 pound box.

Enjoy your vacation! I think one of my favorite vacations we've taken was the 4-day weekend borrowing a friend's cabin, and we deemed it "Reading Vacation." I think everyone should do that once a year or so; it's a great way to make a good dent in your towering stack!

Brandy, I love your idea of a Reading Vacation. That's sort of what it's like when we go to Nantucket- just sit around & read all day :-)

Well, Tuesday was spent in meetings and Wednesday was spent in airports, but here's my post, just slightly delayed.
