Sunday Salon

This Sunday I'm juggling about four different books but I probably won't have time to read any of them because after work I am going to visit a local mosque for the afternoon with my book club. The club is an interfaith group that focuses on learning about each others' religion and the mosque visit is part of that. We're going to have dinner, tour the mosque and see a selection of books that different chapters of the club have read since its inception in 2001. Should be an interesting day! I'm sure I'll come home loaded with new ideas about things to read. I'm struggling through this month's club pick, Samarkand- time will tell if I finish before the discussion date!

Books I'm not struggling through right now include What Happened to Anna K., Medea and Her Children, The Last Chicken in America and Atmospheric Disturbances. With the exception of Atmospheric Disturbances, I'm on a little post-Soviet kick right now. I'll let you all know how it goes.

What are you struggling to read this week, or not?

Sounds a fantastic group. I'm enjoying but struggling with The Sea of Poppies - awkwardly heavy hardback, losts of Indian words and slang which are slowing down the flow of my reading and a lot of different situations - hopefully I'll gat a few hours later to tackle it

Sounds like a great book club! I am in an interfaith marriage (me=Christian, husband=Muslim) and I love reading/learning about other faiths.

I am finishing off a book for a book club meeting I have on Wednesday... only 20 pages left, so I will definitely finish it today.

What a great concept for a book club. I'd love it if something like that were offered around here. I'll have to investigate and see if there's something similar in my area.

I'm not really struggling with any books right now, just wishing that I could read faster. The TBR pile is starting to look a bit intimidating.

When I find myself struggling with a book these days I don't give it much more than that. I am reading Obama's The Audacity of Hope. He is brilliant. Also Death With Interruptions by Saramago, The Monster at our Door about avian flu, Susan Jacoby's The Age of American Unreason, Vaccine, The Speckled Monster (smallpox), The Coming Plague, The Life of Eliz. I, Dunkirk, and Our Dreaming Mind. I seem to be concerned about plagues. I also have about thirty books around here with bookmarks in them which I need to get back to.

Now that's an interesting book club. I enjoyed Atmospheric Disturbances. It's different, and it was nominated for the Giller Prize, a major literary award here in Canada. I'll be interested to see what you think about it. I'm stuggling to write reviews theses past weeks because of illness. I can't do them when I'm sick but I can't really tell authors and publicists that as an excuse. I only managed one this past week, Guernica. I did read The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry this week and that was a treat.

Your book club does sound wonderful. I would love to be part of a group like that.
