Tuesday Thingers

What's the most popular book in your library? Have you read it? What did you think? How many users have it?

My answer: The most popular book in my library is Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. I took a course on Jane Austen in college and had to read all of her books, and while I love many of them, honestly I've never finished Pride and Prejudice- I just couldn't get through it! I found it schmaltzy and I thought Elizabeth Bennett was a boring goody-goody. 23,259 other LibraryThingers have the book, and it's been reviewed 324 times. It's listed as the 10th most most-shared book overall.

I'd really like to be able to say the most popular book in my library is by Jane Austen. No such luck, I'm afraid. Here's my entry.

Marie I envy you on being able to read any of Jane Austins novels. I have tried several times and give up within a few pages. Just never cared for her writing.

Congrads to Beth on her first TT...A small round of applause please!

I don't want to be a spoilsport, but didn't we already have this question? I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later, though, with the myriad of questions you are trying to keep track of. My question, though, is whether many more people have added Pride and Prejudice since the last question to push it above 1984, or if you just recently added it yourself.

Icedream said...

Wendi,
I don't know if you received an answer yet but on LT you need to click on the top tag that says Zeitgeist. Then in the middle of the page is a column that says Top Books and the number of people who have it next to the title.

Jen, Yes I asked the question before, maybe the second or third week I was doing TT. Please don't feel compelled to repeat yourself if you've already answered something before, but we have lots of people who've joined TT since we started it so I don't see the harm in repeating old questions. If you have any ideas for new things I could ask I would love any suggestions! :-)

I am guessing the seven Harry Potter books in my library would fit that category and, if not, the Tolkien books perhaps.

My post is up HERE.

Thanks Marie, for another great question!!

Candy Schultz said...

I didn't realize you meant just on LibraryThing. I never used that zeitgeist tab before. I am not sure that popularity on LT would translate to the entire reading public although Harry Potter being first is probably true.

Do you mean to say, Marie, that you do not have the Harry Potter books? Do you not like them?

Marie Cloutier said...

Candy, No- no Harry Potter for me! I read part of the first book and didn't care for it, so I passed it on. :-)

Marie,

That makes total sense. I think we need to revive that thread where we offer you ideas, because this is a lot of work for one person. I just initially thought that perhaps I was losing my mind when I saw the question!

Cathy said...

Marie--I've made a list of all the questions you've asked so far, and I'll try to come up with some new ones. (I already have an idea for one.) For 8 years I had to come up with 6 questions per week for a group I belonged to. After 2496 questions, the well ran dry. I know the effort something like this takes. Can you email me (cathyskye@yahoo.com)so I'll know where to send any questions I have?

Anonymous said...

I hate to say it but Da Vinci Code is the most popular. Pride and Prejudice is second.

I am always last at getting this done because I don't check my email until late in the day during the week!! But..
