Booking Through Thursday- Influences

btt button

Are your book choices influenced by friends and family? Do their recommendations carry weight for you? Or do you choose your books solely by what you want to read?

My book choices aren't really influenced by anything except my own interests, both personal and professional. My husband will occaisonally suggest a science fiction title that I'll read, and sometimes even enjoy, but for the most part my family's tastes are very different from mine and I tend to be a more self-directed reader rather than one who relies on others' suggestions.

You can find more Booking Through Thursday answers here.

I am influenced by I also think I read off beat stuff that only I would choose. I am always excited to see what bookclub will pick out each month and I love my whacky challenges and I love taking recommendations and seeing if I will like something someone else loves. But then, I always seem to find something original sometimes. (those posts get few to any comments, too.)

I'm influenced by bloggers and online reading groups.

The books I read, I read by choice, not by a family member's recommendation.

There might be a book I see reviewed on your blog, or two or three other blogs that might perk my interest, and I will then research the book further to see if it is something I truly want to read. Otherwise, my reads are of my own choosing.

I'm more self-directed also. It is very dependent on my mood!

I get a lot of my recommendations from book blogs and also book websites and message boards like Book Browse, Chick Lit (it's not a site for only Chick Lit, just an awesome message board about all things literary) and Readerville. I also choose a lot of things that haven't been recommended to me and that I have just come across in pursuing my own interests, so there is a good mix of independent choices and recommendations that I go by when reading and buying books.

I read BookPage and listen to podcasts-Books on the Nightstand and a bunch of NPR books podcasts. I also read on recommendations of friends who I have a lot in common with. But my favorite thing to do is browse bookstores for hours to see what looks interesting. I write down titles and get them later at the library.
