When reading do you read every word? Do you ever skip chapters or skim over parts? (question courtesy of Wendy)
I never skim- I can't imagine skipping whole chapters but the truth is if I ever start to skim, I immediately lose the thread and need to go back, slow down and start again. Since I know this will happen, I just try not to do it. If something is boring or not holding my attention, I just stop reading. Skimming diminishes my comprehension and just makes it harder for me to stay interested.

I could not agree with you more. I will only skim if I'm really not into the booka and its an over-descriptive paragraph, but I don't like to even do it then. Like you, I find myself back-tracking for fear I've missed something. So, whats the point?!
I confess that I sometimes kim, mainly:
1) When I haven't quite finished the selection for my book club, and want to participate in the discussion. (I try to go back and finish the book later.)
2) When it's a business book that made a point and is ticking off more and more examples.
If I start skimming, it means it's time to start a new book.

I skim maybe 5% of the time. I never review a book if I don't read it completely though!
I have a bad habit of skimming over paragraphs if I'm getting bored or am not particularly enjoying the book. Sometimes I'll skim without noticing it and will have to go back, but usually I'll just continue, understanding that the fact that I'm skimming is not a good sign for the book...
