Early Jewish Literature Class

Today begins my Early Jewish Literature class, run by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and taught by Jewish lit A-lister Ilan Stavans. That is a picture of the reading list! The books we will be reading are:

A Very Short Introduction to Jewish Literature, by Stavans,

Lazarillo de Tormes, translated and edited by Stavans,

Celestina, by Fernando de Rojas,

Don Quixote of la Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes, which includes Stavans' Introduction, and

Quixote, The Novel and The World, by Ilan Stavans.

First up, appropriately, is A Very Short Introduction, which I've read and will write a review for soon.  We are not reading every page of every book in the three-week course but I'll do as much as I can. I've always wanted to read Don Quixote (and tried and failed once so far) and I'm really looking forward to Stavans' take on the book and the rest, too. Fun!
