It's Sunday again, and it's one of those Sundays when it's a little hard for me to come up much to say. I've been busy working- I have a new part-time job for the Association of Jewish Libraries- and I'm starting to set up a little home office for myself. My husband and I went to Ikea yesterday to look at desks and I found the perfect one, but I don't want to buy it until I get my sewing room cleaned up enough. I have a broken-down futon that needs to come out; that's a project for this week. I'm anxious to get my little workspace set up now.
My "no buying books for Lent" vow is going well I guess, although I did break it on Thursday night when I attended a book party for local writer Randy Susan Meyers and her new book, The Murderer's Daughters; proceeds from the book went to The Home for Little Wanderers, and I really wanted the book, so I hope God will understand. It was a great party and I got to meet a bunch of folks I knew from Twitter as well as hang out with pals like Dawn Rennert of She is Too Fond of Books and others. The weather that night was cascading downpours and the party was held in a beautiful home complete with a roaring fire; it was kind of wonderful. I'm looking forward to reading Meyers' book- it's got a lot of very positive attention.
Today I'm headed off to a bookstore or two for some browsing and I'm starting a new book, Melanie Benjamin's Alice I Have Been, which I've been looking forward to for a long time. I hope everyone has a great Sunday!

The book party sounds like great fun, in spite of the rain.
I read Alice I Have Been a few weeks ago, and totally loved it! Enjoy!

I worked on cleaning out my computer room/office in my house this week. It felt so good to get it organized.
Have a good week!
I can't wait to hear what you think of Alice I Have Been. It's waiting for me at the library and I'm dying to read it. Of course, the library is closed today. I do have a key (I work there), but I doubt my boss would appreciate me sneaking into to the library to get a book I simply can't wait for. Ugh!
It sounds so fun that you have access to all these book events and bloggers in your area!
Looking forward to your review of The Murderer's Daughters. Cool title.
Books purchased to benefit a good cause do not count for the whole Lenten thing. God grants a bookish dispensation. It's true. Ask him. Sure he will back me up on this one.
There's nothing as fun as going to see an author speak!
I've given you an award:

God will understand!!
Well, if you're going to go to a book party, you almost HAVE to buy the person's book, don't you think? Have to! I think that's a worthwile goal, though, to refrain from buying books. Personally, I am a big, big library user. I was there today and came within a whisker of snagging a "hot read" copy of Robert Parker's latest. Sadly, I was beaten to it. Sigh. I haven't given anything up for Lent, but I am nonetheless on a self-improvement process (my own Lenten project!) and am reading "This Hungry Spirit" by C. Clinton Sidle. Lots to like in it, including a set of guiding mental models or strategies for helping you develop self-esteem and become a happier, more effective human being. I like the emphasis on happiness, and that happiness is the result of thinking about others, and not just yourself!
This purchase is granted special immunity, I'm sure of it. If if will make you feel better, hold off reading it until after Easter.
I took points for my month-long "book acquisition ban" when I bought THE MURDERER'S DAUGHTERS on Tuesday, but, the cause, and the fun, were well worth it.
Decluttering can be a task, but it's nice to have a vision of your new work space!
Alice I Have Been looks to be quite fascinating. Enjoy!
Your new job sounds interesting! I'll be curious to hear if you have some access to great Jewish literature! I've been eyeing Alice I Have been for a while, but it still might be a while til I get to it. I hope you enjoy!
Congrats on the job! And how cool that you found the perfect desk for your home office!
I think you'll be okay for Lent, as buying The Murderer's Daughters was more a charitible contribution than an actual book buy. ;)
I have an award for you
I really want to read Alice soon. Good luck with your book buying ban!
It sounds like you had a cozy and wonderful time at your book party, and since you bought a book for a good cause, I think it's ok that you slipped. I hope you enjoy the Alice book, I have seen such wonderful reviews of it all over the place. I will be interested in what you think of it, and will wait to buy my copy. Have a great week!
well, I broke my 'no beverages but water' for Lent this weekend, so it is only fair that you broke your no book buying one. lol
