Yesterday I got to go into Manhattan for two treats- waffles at the famous Wafles and Dinges stand in Bryant Park, and visit to Kinokuniya, the US flagship of the Japanese bookstore chain, right across the street.
I've written about Kinokuniya a lot but that's because it's probably my favorite bookstore in midtown and possibly in all of Manhattan, or maybe even all of New York City. It's got a great highly curated selection of general fiction and nonfiction in English, a selection of Japanese lit in translation you can't beat and gorgeous art books, notebooks, a whole big selection of stationery, gifts, tons of Hello Kitty, Studio Ghibli stuff, manga, doodads and gewgahs and basically everything. They even have a cafe with great sandwiches and pastries.
But I didn't go to the cafe because we started off the afternoon with waffles.
One is big enough to share but you should have seen the look I got from my husband when I suggested that for next time!
Because there will be a next time.
I came home from the bookstore with a haul including a book, a notebook, a box of pencils and a pretty bookmark.
I'll tell you more about the book later. The notebook and pencils are for my journal habit and the bookmark has a cat with a music book so that was a no-brainer.
Kinokuniya is always fun and the midtown location really is the best. There is another near me in North Jersey but it's smaller and doesn't have the same selection- it's much heavier on Japanese language stuff. I wish they had more English language books especially crime. The midtown store is the capital of Japanese crime fiction.
Anyway that's all, hope you're having a great Sunday!
